Raynaud’s Phenomenon and Scleroderma

Raynaud’s Phenomenon (RP) can precede the onset and development of scleroderma, or systemic sclerosis, by months or even years. The identification of early microvascular changes is today possible through the recognition of nailfold capillaroscopic patterns. In addition, autoantibodies (ANA, anti centromere, anti topoisomerase I) are very helpful hematological signs, as they are already present in the earliest pre-sclerodermatous phase.
Thus, in presence of RP, a careful clinical assessment together with the presence of an altered capillaroscopic pattern and positive antibody results may allow for a diagnosis of very early SSc.

Self Help and Life-style Changes

Raynaud’s sufferers can be advised on the many ways in which they can help to prevent and/or shorten attacks.  The IRSS can advise on how to dress warmly, activities to avoid or ways to reduce the impact of some activities.  Information leaflets are available with tips on keeping warm, skin care, questions and answers - all aimed at self help.  Heating aids and information books and DVDs are also available and can be bought on-line or by sending a cheque or postal order (Euro only please) to the society with a list of the required items.
